The church isn’t just a building. It’s a cross-culture, multi-ethnic movement—better known as the ekklesia—a movement centered around Jesus. The first-century church faced challenges at every turn. How'd they overcome their challenges? Is there something they knew that we don’t?

We're looking back at the actions—and specifically the reactions—of Jesus's earliest followers: the men and women who sat at his feet, who clearly understood his mission, what he wanted them to do, and what the ekklesia of Jesus (the Jesus movement) was supposed to be in every single generation.

In this six-part small group study adapted from a live message, Andy Stanley explores the early history of this Jesus movement known as the ekklesia.

Part 1: What’s in a Name

Being part of a local gathering of Jesus followers means you are part of something big. It’s up to each generation to determine what Christianity looks like, sounds like, and reacts like.

Part 2: Opening Day

When the church first began, a natural question surfaced right away: What do we do now? The answer had less to do with what needed to be done and more to do with understanding who our faith was in.

Part 3: Our Turn

We are the church for our generation. We determine what Christianity looks like for the next generation. We need to be for the next generation what we wish the previous generation had given us.

Part 4: Big and Bold

Early Christians were bold, confident, and courageous. How we pray is an indicator as to whether we’ve strayed from that or not.

Part 5: The Wonder of it All

The message of the church is a message for the world.

Part 6: The Enemy Within

It’s easy to believe the greatest enemy of the church comes from outside the church.
